Buying in Newmilns

Newmilns, East Ayrshire, is a small town of about 3000 residents roughly 7 miles to the east of Kilmarnock and 25 miles southwest of Glasgow. It is situated in the scenic Irvine Valley through which the River Irvine runs and, with the neighbouring towns of Darvel and Galston, forms an area known as the “Upper” Irvine Valley. Newmilns is technically in the burgh of Newmilns and Greenholm with Newmilns to the north of the Irvine River and Greenholm to the south. While once considered distinct settlements, today they come under Newmilns collectively. The town as we know it today saw a boom and influx of people in the late 19th century when lace curtain-making brought much prosperity. The town expanded in the early 20th century to accommodate the increasing workforce, until the slowdown and inevitable decline of these industries. While not at the levels it once was, lace is still made in the town.

Today, Newmilns is primarily a commuter settlement. For the most part, residents travel to work in nearby towns such as Kilmarnock, Galston, Irvine, Darvel, Ayr, and some also travel to Glasgow. With the A71 trunk road passing through the middle of the town travel is relatively easy and quick by car to reach Kilmarnock and Irvine to the west. The road offers onward connections north or south if trying to reach Ayr or Glasgow. In terms of public transport, the town has no railway station of its own, the closest being located nearby in Kilmarnock but it does have local bus services connecting to nearby towns as well as Kilmarnock where a wider array of routes can be found.

In terms of local amenities and things to do, there’s the usual array of local shops and independent businesses you would expect to have in a village of this size. There’s also a choice of pubs and shops, a bowling club, a dry ski slope (the only one in the UK charity run), a mountain bike track and three public parks. For more amenities, residents would typical travel to Kilmarnock.

As for local schooling then, Newmilns Primary School caters for children of nursery and primary ages. For secondary education, pupils would typically attend Loudoun Academy just outside Galston.
