Monifieth is a small coastal town in Angus with a population of roughly 8,100 residents. It is situated on the north bank of the Firth of Tay on the east coast, only about 6 miles to the east of Dundee city centre, about 10 miles south-west of Arbroath and about 39 miles northeast of Edinburgh.

Monifieth today shares a contiguous border with Dundee. Prior to the 19th century though, it was a small village. It was the establishment and growth of the textile, sea and jute industries in the nearby and wider area that brought more prosperity and people to the town as well as nearby Dundee and set Monifieth on the path to what we know it as today.

The town’s proximity to Dundee naturally means many of the residents travel to Dundee for work or for study. This also means residents benefitting from the various amenities and attractions to be found in Dundee, though Monifieth has a small retail and leisure complex of its own to the north of the town. There is also a shopping area to be found in the high street, which has a variety of independent local businesses, cafes and bars to enjoy.

Monifieth is also noted as a significant golfing centre, with its links course being used as a qualifier for the British Open Championship which is held at nearby Carnoustie. This association contributes significantly to the town’s local economy and there are several hotels and B&Bs catering for visitors to the town. Locals and tourists can also enjoy the glorious sandy beach as well as Monikie and Crombie Country Parks, which offer a variety of fun outdoor activities including wildlife spotting and water sports.

As for transport links to the town, it is well connected. The A92 runs between Arbroath and Dundee immediately to the north of Monifieth. The road offers onward connections to the south by way of the Tay Road Bridge, and north to Stonehaven and Aberdeen. The A930 runs through the town east to west also offering a route to and from Dundee city centre. The town has its own railway station – Monifieth Station – on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen line with regular services to both. There are also regular bus services operating for travel to Arbroath and Dundee and smaller nearby settlements.

In terms of local schooling, there are currently two primary schools located in Monifieth and one secondary school. The schools are Grange Primary School, Seaview Primary School and Monifieth High School. The catchment area for the school includes nearby Birkhill and other rural areas of Angus including Newbigging. Many of the school’s facilities have just recently been renovated, including new windows and several extensions. A new community wing has been planned for the school to allow the local community to become more involved in school life.
