Buying in Dalry
Dalry is a small town in the Garnock Valley in North Ayrshire of roughly 5,250 residents. It is roughly 26 miles southwest of Glasgow, 17 miles southwest of Paisley, 5 miles north of Kilwinning, and about 22 ½ miles north of Ayr. The town sites on the west bank of the river Garnock and is somewhat surrounded by rivers; the Rye Water to the north, the Caaf Water to the south, and the River Garnock to the east.
The town of Dalry as we know it today began to take shape properly in the 18th century serving the traffic along the main route from Glasgow to Ayrshire, and developing as a small weaving community, with many locals employed by the Paisley and Glasgow textile manufacturers. This continued up until the discovery of coal in the nearby area in the 19th century, which really transformed the area bringing more industries, and of course people to work and live in the town.
Today Dalry is mostly a commuter settlement for residents working in wider Ayrshire towns of Kilwinning, Irvine, Kilmarnock, Ayr, as well as Paisly and Glasgow. However, there is some local employment provided by Roche UK which is the largest producer of vitamin C in the world in the Capital Business Park. Good transport links help commuting residents with Dalry railway station on the Ayrshire Coast Line which goes directly to Glasgow Central Station. In the opposite direction, it also takes travellers to Ayr town centre, and, at Kilwinning connects to the Ayrshire Coast stations all the way to Largs. The town is bypassed by the A737 which allows for fast travel by car northwards to Paisley and Glasgow, or southwards into southern Ayrshire.
In terms of amenities and things to do, Dalry has the usual array of small local shops and services. For a wider array of shops and services residents typically make use of those in the larger nearby towns of Kilwinning, Irvine, Saltcoats, Ardrossan, and Stevenston, which are all roughly within 20-25 minutes by car. In terms of Darly specific things, the area is great for walking and nature, with many routes going through the Garnock Valley. The Lynn Falls along the Lynn Glen walk are particular draws, as is the Barony of Kersland waterfall. Another local landmark is the Lovers’ Walk near the River Garnock.
As for local education, the local primary schools are Dalry Primary and St. Palladius Primary Schools. Dalry Primary feeds into Kilwinning Academy and St. Palladius feeds into St. Matthew’s Academy in Saltcoats.
In January 2025, property in Dalry has an average value of £140,806. Over the last 12 months however, different property types have had different average prices. Detached properties for instance sold for £227,480, semi-detached for £139,150, terraced for £101,545, and flats for £43,750.
