Buying in Port Glasgow
The town of Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, is a vibrant town of roughly 14,300 residents. The town has a rich maritime heritage and is known for its lovely riverfront location on the Clyde estuary and strong community spirit. Port Glasgow offers a blend of historical charm and modern amenities, making it an attractive option for those considering a move to the area. The town forms a contiguous border with neighbouring Greenock to the west, which itself forms another contiguous border with Gourock to the west again, together forming a much larger conurbation of about 65,000 people.
Port Glasgow as we know it today took root back when the settlement was actually a fishing hamlet called Newark. However, as demand for importing and exporting grew from the city of Glasgow through the 17th century, Port Glasgow was developed to act as a remote port for the city. The reason for this was because large ships were unable to navigate the shallow and meandering route of the River Clyde to the city centre. As a result, Newark was chosen in 1668 to become the main port of the city with a name change to as ‘New Port Glasgow’, this was shortened to ‘Port Glasgow’ in 1775. Port Glasgow the became home to dry docks and shipbuilding beginning in 1780. This maritime focus continued throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, becoming renowned for its shipyards, which played a crucial role in the development of the town leading to what we know today. Indeed, the town’s shipyards were once among the busiest in the world, with notable firms like Scott & Sons and William Hamilton & Co. contributing to a thriving industry.
In recent decades, Port Glasgow has faced economic challenges due to the decline of these traditional industries. However, more recently the town has been undergoing revitalisation efforts to diversify its economy and improve its infrastructure. Investments in housing, retail, and community services have helped to modernise Port Glasgow while preserving its historical character. It is a blend of old and new. The town benefits from a picturesque setting on the banks of the Clyde estuary, offering residents scenic views and recreational opportunities. The local economy has diversified to include retail parks, hospitality, and various other small to medium sized enterprises, with these new businesses and residential developments contributing to a rejuvenating town centre. Port Glasgow does benefit from some tourism in the summer months, as people visit or pass through the town on their way to the ferry terminal in Greenock.
As for local employment, many residents work nearby, or in Greenock and Gourock. Many also commute to Glasgow city centre. Port Glasgow benefits from excellent transport links. The town is well-connected by road, with the M8 motorway and A8 providing easy access to Glasgow and other major cities beyond. The town has two railway stations – Port Glasgow and Woodhall railway stations – that offer regular services to Glasgow seven days a week, making it a viable option for commuters. The nearby ferry terminal in Gourock provides connections to other parts of the Clyde estuary to towns such as Dunoon and Kilcreggan.
In terms of amenities and things to do, Port Glasgow itself offers a variety of amenities and activities for residents and visitors alike. The town features local shops, supermarkets, and dining options, as well as community centres and recreational facilities. Notable attractions include Newark Castle built in 1478, and Customs House: a historical building reflecting the town’s maritime past. Likewise, there are also many monuments dedicated to the town’s maritime heritage. Additionally, Port Glasgow’s proximity to natural landscapes provides ample opportunities for outdoor activities, including hiking and boating.
