Buying in Bishopton

Bishopton, Renfrewshire, is a village of roughly 4,700 residents. The village is popular and seen as accessible, friendly, and a safe place for children and families. It is roughly 3 miles to the west of Erskine, almost 6 miles northwest of Renfrew, about 13.5 miles west of Glasgow City Centre and 8 miles east of Port Glasgow. There are many other settlements within a relatively short distance of Bishopton too, not to mention connections to the islands, and Loch Lomond also well within reach.

In recent times Bishopton was a key location producing ammunition and explosives during World War 2. Going a bit further back in time, there is evidence by way of artefacts that show there was a Roman fort in the area. These artefacts are on display in The Hunterian Museum in Glasgow. Today, the village has changed and is now an attractive commuter settlement. Most residents travel to Glasgow, Paisley, Erskine, and Greenock for work.

Bishopton is indeed classed as a village but feels like a town for how connected it is with abundant transport links for residents. The M8 motorway runs past the town to the north and east, allowing for fast travel onwards to Glasgow city centre or farther into west Renfrewshire and Inverclyde. The village is located around 2 miles from the southern end of the Erskine Bridge, which spans the River Clyde between Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire. Residents also benefit from a dedicated railway station – Bishopton Station on the Inverclyde line – towards the south of the town. Approximately 58 trains run per day through the station into Glasgow Central Station. Or, if going in the opposite direction trains terminate at Gourock and Wemyss Bay, where ferry services can be found for onward island travel to Rothesay and Dunoon. Glasgow Airport is just four miles to the southeast too.

As for amenities and things to do, Bishopton could do with a few more of its own, but that hasn’t been too much of a problem given how connected the village is to other larger settlements with all the amenities therein. There are some to speak of: the Ingliston Country Club is an award-winning equestrian, hotel, and wedding venue popular with locals and visitors alike. Mar Hall Golf and Spa Resort is also nearby, offering another venue for dining, holidaying, relaxing and even golf on a private course. Continuing with golf for players enthusiasts, Erskine Golf Club is very highly rated local club with some fantastic views over the River Clyde. The listed Blantyre Monument is also worth a mention, built to commemorate the bravery of Robert Walter Stuart, the 11th Lord Blantyre, who lived at nearby Erskine House (now Mar Hall). He was a Major-General in the British Army and served in the Napoleonic Wars with the Duke of Wellington. He was killed accidentally by a stray bullet in a street fight in Brussels in 1830. The monument was planned by friends who held him in high esteem.

Back to today then with local schooling, Bishopton is served by two primary schools which are Bishopton Primary and Dargavel Primary. A third primary school, also in Dargavel, is planned to open in August 2027. Secondary age school pupils attend Park Mains High School in nearby Erskine, or Trinity High School in Renfrew.

In January 2024, property in Bishopton stood at an average price of £285,313. Over the last 12 months, different property types have had different average prices. Detached properties sold for £340,264, semi-detached for £233,560, terraced for £200,855, and flats for £190,690. There are several new developments of modern homes nearby at Dargavel Village from Stewart Milne, Taylor Wimpey, and Bellway.
