Buying in Dalmellington

Dalmellington is a small market town in East Ayrshire with a population of around 1,500 residents. The town is situated about 15 miles southeast of Ayr and about 50 miles southwest of Glasgow. Dalmellington is situated in the Doon Valley, about 600 ft above sea level. The town is in a rural location, sometimes at odds with its industrial past. It had a prominent textile, iron, and coal mining industry.

Today, the town is predominantly a dormitory town with residents commuting to Ayr and other nearby settlements for work. Dalmellington lies on the A713 road which connects it to Ayr, and other nearby settlements, as well as Castle Douglas further south. The town has no railway station, the closest of which can be found to the west in Maybole, and to the east in New Cumnock. There are several local bus services, but car travel is the primary method of transport for people in the town.

In terms of local amenities and things to do, there are several eating establishments in the town, and a range of typical independent shops, a bank and Post Office. The Doon Valley Museum is housed in one of the oldest buildings in the town – dating from 1744 – explores the social and industrial heritage of the area and boasts an art gallery. Loch Doon, to the south is the largest inland loch in southern Scotland, and offers fantastic opportunities for walking and cycling as well as the Carrick Forest Drive, a wonderful forest drive through the Galloway forest showcasing Ayrshires mountain scenery.

Also worth a mention, Dalmellington is also a recognised UNESCO Biosphere community. Biosphere Communities are places where residents and businesses have committed to being Proud Supporters of the local Biosphere.

As for local schooling then, Dalmellington has two schools within the ‘Doon Campus’ – Dalmellington Primary School and Doon Academy catering for pupils of secondary school age from the surrounding areas.
