Buying in Darvel

Darvel is a small town of roughly 3,900 residents in East Ayrshire. It is stated in the beautiful Irvine Valley alongside the River Irvine. Darvel was known as ‘The Lang Toon’ for its layout. It was famed for carpets and lace at one time had 20 textile mills. These textiles – especially the lace – were exported across the world. The last lace mill (making lace curtains) closed and moved just over to Newmilns. Darvel is situated on the A71 about 10 miles east of Kilmarnock and about 27 miles south of Glasgow. The towns of Newmilns and Galston are short distances away to the west also on the A71.

Today Darvel is dormitory town for residents working in wider Ayrshire settlements such as Kilmarnock, Irvine, Ayr, Prestwick, Newmilns, Galston, and Crosshouse. Though, there are a sizeable amount of people also working in Glasgow and in East Kilbride given the town’s proximity to Lanarkshire. To get around, commuters and residents rely on car or bus using the A71 road. The town has no railway line of its own at present, the nearest of which is in Kilmarnock to the east.

In terms of local amenities and things to do, there are several places to eat within Darvel, and a selection of independent shops too. The Darvel Music Festival has taken place in the town bi-annually since 2001. It features ten days of music with seven concerts and twenty-five international and national performers at the town hall. It draws people from the local area as well as further afield in Scotland and indeed the rest of the United Kingdom. A memorial stands at Lochfield farm where Alexander Fleming, the man who discovered penicillin was born in 1881. At the foot of nearby Loudoun Hill stands the amazing sculpture ‘Spirit of Scotland’ next to a small picnic area. This steel sculpture celebrates Wallace’s victory over the English here in 1297. Darvel is also a good base for outdoor pursuits such as walking and cycling for its position within the Irvine Valley.

As for local schooling then, Darvel Primary is the only school in the town. Pupils of secondary age attend Loudon Academy in nearby Galston.

In January 2024, property in Darvel stood at an average value of £119,668. Over the last 12 months, different property types have had different average prices. Detached properties sold for £207,110, semi-detached £120,050, terraced £81,667, and flats £41,856.
