Buying in Mauchline
Mauchline in East Ayrshire is a town of roughly 4,100 residents. It is about 12 miles northeast of Ayr, and 9 miles southeast of Kilmarnock. While a small town it does have a rich local history of industry. The town took shape and developed as an agricultural service centre in the 18th century. A sandstone quarry was also developed at this time and lasted until the 1950s. Box working and fernware were produced for over a century until 1933. The town also boasts a curling stone factory dating from the 19th century and is still in operation today. Mauchline is also well-known for its connections with Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns, who lived in the town with his wife Jean Armour.
Today Mauchline is a semi-rural dormitory town for people working throughout Ayrshire in the larger towns of Ayr, Prestwick, Kilmarnock and Irvine amongst others, though some also commute into Glasgow. The A76 Kilmarnock Road effectively cuts the town in half allowing for easy onward connections by car to Kilmarnock, Glasgow, Cumnock, Ayr and further. The town has no railway line of its own, the closest ones are to be found in Auchinleck and Kilmarnock. There are several local bus services connecting locals to nearby towns but residents would have to travel to Ayr or Kilmarnock for a larger selection of routes and national services.
As for amenities and things to do, Mauchline has the usual array of independent shops and services you would expect of a small town of this size including some decent local pubs and hotels. For more choice generally, locals would typically travel to Kilmarnock, or slightly further to Ayr to use the much wider array of services therein. Having said that, Mauchline has a slightly higher array of shops and amenities catering for visitors who come to find out more about Robert Burns. His former home in Castle Street – where it was arguably his most creative and productive period – is now the Burns House Museum. Other historical draws include the now private Mauchline Castle which was built in the 1400s as a monastic residence for Melrose Abbey. The castle is now the family home of Alexander Hamilton but views can still be seen from the cobbled streets around the Burns House Museum.
In terms of local schooling for children, the only school in the town is Mauchline Primary School. When pupils reach secondary school age they would travel to Cumnock, or to Kilmarnock.
