Campbeltown is a peaceful town and former royal burgh of roughly 4,850 residents on the beautiful peninsula of Kintyre and is one of the largest towns in Argyll. Located on a deep bay sheltered by Davaar Island and the surrounding hills, it is an ideal base for exploring the many attractions of scenic southern Kintyre.
Campbeltown was a prosperous town – still visible in the architecture today – centred on whisky and fishing. Indeed, it once had no less than 34 whisky distilleries, and was the self-proclaimed whisky capital of the world. Today, there are just three remaining in the town: Glen Scotia, Glengyle and Springbank. Springbank Distillery was founded in 1828 by the Mitchell family – and still in their hands today. It retains the old distilling methods to make Longrow whisky. Today, Whisky tourism and tourism generally play a big role in the local economy and many of the town’s shops and services are geared towards the annual swell of visitors with hotels, guest houses and local eateries in abundance.
Some notable events include the annual Mull of Kintyre Music Festival, which has seen acts ranging from up-and-coming local bands to well-established groups such as Deacon Blue, The Stranglers and Idlewild perform. The Kintyre Songwriters Festival, a fairly low key annual gathering aimed at promoting the wealth and variety of original music across the area is held during the last weekend of May and is open to anyone interested in performing.
In terms of transport links, the A83 trunk road connects the town by road to northern Scotland and allows for further travel on to Glasgow and wider Scotland. Campbeltown Airport is near the town and has a scheduled service to Glasgow International Airport on weekdays and some Sundays in summer. There is also a regular ferry service from Ardrossan on the mainland to Campbeltown ferry terminal on the doorstep of the town centre.
