North Berwick is a very desirable and pleasant seaside town in East Lothian situated on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth. Formerly a Royal Burgh, it has a population of roughly 7,000 residents. It’s about 20 miles east-northeast of Edinburgh. The town was once a fashionable holiday destination in the 19th century as many seaside towns were generally, and because of the lovely sandy beaches. Undoubtedly its fortunes thrived in conjunction with Edinburgh with many a holidaymaker travelling from the city to the town, but rather uniquely, despite having a railway since 1850, the industrial revolution didn’t take route. So, it really became more of an attractive place to live for wealthy Edinburgh commuters and retirees. This has undoubtedly contributed to the factors that make North Berwick the attractive and affluent town it is.
Today then, North Berwick is predominantly a dormitory town for residents working in Edinburgh and other East Lothian towns like Musselburgh, Prestonpans, Haddington and Gullane. Transport links are well developed, the railway station delivers commuters to and from Edinburgh in just over 30 minutes, and trains are regular throughout the day. For car users, travel by road takes longer to Edinburgh, about 45 to 50 minutes. This is by the A198, then onto the A1 road.
North Berwick can easily be described as vibrant despite its size.
