Buying in East Linton
East Linton, East Lothian is a small, countryside village sitting between Haddington and Dunbar. It has a population of roughly 1730 residents. The village lies on the bridging point of the River Tyne which led to the village becoming a staging post and important market town. It was known for its agricultural trade with cattle and grain markets.
Today it is more of a quiet residential village though it does still act as a rural service centre. It is bypassed by the A1/A199 and many residents use the trunk road to commute to work in nearby Dunbar, North Berwick, Haddington, and Edinburgh city centre. The village has no railway station of its own – yet – it is currently under construction scheduled to open in 2024, allowing for direct travel by train to Edinburgh city centre.
In terms of amenities and things to do, the village has the usual array of shops and services you would expect in a village of this size. Residents benefit from being able to reach larger towns such as Haddington and Dunbar in a relatively short span of time and the extra amenities and interests therein.
While not a tourist hotspot of Scotland, the village does have some small draw from the number of historic buildings and attractions to be found in and around the village such as Preston Mill, an old watermill in the care of the National Trust for Scotland, which is still working today since originally being built in 1599. The mill was the location setting for several scenes during the Jacobite Uprising in the ‘Outlander’ TV series. A restored timber octagonal auction mart for cattle, pigs and sheep in Station Road was also used in filming Outlander. The mart, dating back to 1850, has been fully restored and is now also used for various community functions and a Sunday market.
As for local schooling, the village is served by a single primary school: East Linton Primary. When of secondary age, pupils would attend Dunbar Grammar School.
In January 2024, property in East Linton stood at an average value of £425,285. Over the last 12 months, different property types have had different average prices. Detached properties sold for £488,739, semi-detached for £293,800, terraced for £375,420, and flats for £302,304. When the new train station is completed in 2024 it should only help add to the appeal of the village.
