Buying in Queen’s Park
Queen’s Park is a popular area forming part of the sprawling southside of the city of Glasgow near Strathbungo, Shawlands, Battlefield, Mount Florida, and Crosshill. Queen’s Park was given its name by the 60-hectare Victorian park designed by the famed Sir Joseph Paxton. The park was dedicated to the memory of Mary, Queen of Scots who lost the Battle of Langside near the park, and the park given its present name in place of the original South Side Park.
Queen’s Park today is a popular urban residential area for a whole cross-section of people from students to renters to first-time buyers, and life-long southsiders. The number of nearby amenities, the park, and transport links, as well as fantastic sandstone tenement properties with period features make it as a desirable place as any to live. In 2020 Conde Nast named Queen’s Park as one of the “coolest neighbourhoods” in the UK.
By car Glasgow city centre is about 15 minutes away, but most commuters would probably go for the train from either Queen’s Park station, Crosshill, or Pollokshields East into Glasgow central, all of which are in walking distance and deliver commuters to Glasgow central in about 10 minutes or less. Bus services are frequent and deliver passengers into the city centre in about 25 minutes.
Like many places in the southside the area is brimming with amenities and things to do. Whether it be greengrocers, butchers, delis, off sales, pubs, bars, cafes, restaurants, other independent shops, nearby gyms, as well as the usual array national supermarket chains and shops; all are practically on the doorstep of residents or within a short walk. Indeed, Shawlands itself, considered the beating heart of the southside, is a 10 to 15 minute walk away.
The park itself is used by many thousands of people annually and remains a focal point for the people across Glasgow. There is a regular farmers markets and a wide range of events, many of these in the redeveloped bandstand. The park also contains three lawn bowls clubs, a tennis centre, a five-a-side football facility and a pitch and putt course within the park, as well as Camphill House which is a former mansion built in 1806 but has since been converted to private apartments. There’s a weekly 5km Parkrun that takes place each Saturday. Langside Halls, a former bank office built in 1847 originally in Queen Street before being moved to its current location at the corner of the park is now a community centre and events venue.
In terms of local schooling, being an urban area there are several nearby schools. Most primary age pupils typically attend Holy Cross Primary, Anette Street Primary, or Cuthbertson Primary. Pupils of secondary school age typically attend Kings Park Secondary, Hillpark Secondary, or Holyrood Secondary School.
In January 2024, property in Queen’s Park stood at an average value of £200,000. Though it is not uncommon for larger, well-maintained, and attractive properties to sell for over £300,000. However, the area remains affordable for most.
