Newport-on-Tay is a small, quiet, and quite scenic coastal town on the banks of the River Tay with a population of roughly 4,300 residents. While in the Fife council area, the town is just across the river from the city of Dundee by way of the Tay Road Bridge, just approximately 3.3 miles. Newport-on-Tay initially grew as wealthy jute merchants sought quieter, cleaner surroundings out with the city limits.

Being so close to Dundee, Newport-on-Tay today is predominantly a commuter town for the city. Transport into Dundee is quite easy by way of car or bus because of the town’s proximity to the A92 and Tay Road Bridge. Bus services are frequent and good, and transport commuters directly into Dundee city centre in about 15 – 20 mins. There are other services for travel to St. Andrews and to Edinburgh. The town has no railway station or nearby line. There hasn’t really been a need for this from the town’s perspective, again because of the town’s proximity to Dundee and the size of the town. Residents would typically make their way to Dundee train station for onward train travel.

In terms of amenities and things to do, Newport-on-Tay is a small quiet town with not too many things to do. It benefits from proximity to Dundee for a variety of activities and amenities.
