Buying in Thornhill

Thornhill is a village of roughly 1700 residents in Dumfries and Galloway. It is about 12 miles south of Sanquhar and about 16 miles north of Dumfries on the main A76 road. Thornhill sits in the Nithsdale valley with the Carsphairn and Scaur range to the west and the Lowther hills to the east. There has been habitation in the area since the time of the Romans, but the town as we know it today was initially a small, planned village built in 1717 on the Queensberry Estate on the road linking Dumfries to Glasgow. Being planned, it is primarily comprised of wide grid pattern streets unlike older medieval villages and towns with their narrower winding streets.

As Thornhill was built as a staging post on the main route north to Glasgow, it had many coaching inns serving those passing through the town. Notably, a number of these are still in business today and can trace their history uninterrupted back to the 18th century. Other amenities include the usual chain stores, as well as other local independent retailers. Overall, the village has a good selection of shops and great places to eat. The village is also very close to Drumlanrig Castle, or the ‘Pink Palace’ as it is affectionately known because of the colour of the stone. It is one of the finest examples of 17th-century renaissance architecture in Scotland. Home to the current Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, however the castle, its gardens and grounds are open to the public. Also worth a mention is the Thornhill Music Festival which has grown into a popular annual community event, with regular attendees from all over the UK coming each year. The festival has grown each year thanks to the help of the local community.

The main transport links for the town are by road. The A76 trunk road cuts through the town north to south and allows for easy onward travel to Dumfries and Ayr. The town has no railway station, unfortunately, however, the line is still used. Residents can travel to Sanquhar or Dumfries to travel by train. Bus services are frequent and help residents get around to other towns in Dumfries and Galloway where train services and national transport links can be found.

As for local schooling then, Thornhill is served by Wallace Hall Primary School and Nursery, and Wallace Hall Academy.
