Buying in Gretna

Gretna is a town of about 3000 residents in the Dumfries and Galloway council area. It is located close to the A74 on the border of Scotland and England, close to the mouth of the River Esk. It is about 31 miles to the east of Dumfries, and 8 miles to the east of Annan. Carlisle is just 10 miles away.

Gretna as we know it today is a planned town built during the First World War. It was to provide homes for the employees of a munitions factory that was at the time the biggest in the world by sheer size; it was nine miles long and had a workforce of 30,000 people. In times past it was also a customs port because of its location on the Scottish-English border.

Today, Gretna is most well known for Gretna Green and marriages. Around 5,000 couples marry in Gretna every year. Historically it was to Gretna Green that young English runaway couples eloped so that they could be married ‘over the anvil’ at the famous Blacksmiths Shop in the town (and married over an actual anvil) from the age of 16 (then the English law stated no one under the age of 21 could be married). Gretna Green’s Famous Blacksmiths Shop and wedding venue, where couples have come to marry since 1754, is still in the heart of the town, anvil, and all. Naturally, the marriage industry continues to be important to the town to this very day.

Besides the marriage industry, many residents commute to the larger town of Dumfries and other towns and villages in the nearby Dumfries and Galloway area. As such, transport links are well developed with Gretna Green train station serving the town offering regular services onwards to the larger towns of Dumfries and Carlisle. By road, there is easy access to the A75 and A74 roads for travel to the wider Dumfries and Galloway area, as well as to northern England, and further still to Glasgow or lower England. There are local bus services connecting Gretna to other towns and villages in the Dumfries and Galloway area, as well as to Dumfries and Carlisle. There are also coach services connecting the town to Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Carlisle.

There’s no doubt many amenities have developed around the marriage sector in Gretna. There are numerous hotels and B&Bs in the town, as well as numerous independent shops and eateries, all catering to locals and the annual influx of elopers and tourists. There is more to Gretna than the marriage sector though. It is also often used as a base to explore the wider and beautifully scenic Dumfries and Galloway area, with specific activities like walking, cycling, fishing, and animal spotting being very popular. As such, tourism activities are also important to the town. The Gretna Gateway shopping centre is a particular draw for visitors too with its shops and restaurants.

In terms of education in the town, the local primary school is Gretna Primary. Springfield Primary is another primary school nearby but out with the town proper to the north past the A74 road. The local secondary school is Annan Academy, located in the town of Annan to the east.

As of January 2024, the average price for a residential property in Gretna stood at £150,175. Though different property types in Gretna have had different average selling prices over the last 12 months: £214,633 for detached properties, £125,318 for semi-detached, £121,159 for terraced and £58,000 for flats.
