Buying in Troon

Troon is a town in South Ayrshire, on the west coast of Scotland, with roughly 15,000 residents. It sits about 8 miles north of Ayr and just a few miles northeast of Prestwick Airport.

Troon itself is of course synonymous with golf in Scotland and is home to the Royal Troon Golf Course, one of the hosts of the Open Golf Championship. The course is chosen to host this annual event roughly every seven years. There are six other golf courses in the area too, so golf lovers are spoiled for choice.

Besides golf, Troon Harbour played a significant part in the development of the town for many years. It was home to the Ailsa Shipbuilding Company, which constructed many vessels for customers all over the world until it finally closed in the year 2000. The harbour itself has shifted focus since then to become a bustling fishing port, yachting marina, ferry port and roll-off-roll-on ferry terminal. Because of the fishing, the harbour is also Ayrshire’s main fish market, providing fresh seafood to many eateries and restaurants just a stone’s throw away.  Troon itself is also a popular coastal town that attracts many tourists and day-trippers annually who visit the beach and seafront attractions. It is also very popular with walkers, cyclists and water sports enthusiasts.

The golf courses, marina and coastal setting contribute significantly to the local economy and draw in many visitors. As a result, the town has an abundance of independent shops as well cafes, pubs, restaurants, and accommodation focused businesses catering for the locals and visitors alike. These activities support many jobs in the area, but many residents also commute to nearby Irvine, Ayr, Prestwick, Kilmarnock and Glasgow.

In terms of transport links then, residents can commute fairly easily because of the excellent transport links. Troon has its own train station that operates regular trains to and from Glasgow Central Station each day. The A737 and A77/M77 roads run nearby and allow for fast travel by car around Ayrshire, as well as offering direct routes to Glasgow. Bus services to nearby towns and Glasgow city centre are also frequent and readily accessible.

Moving on to local education for children then, the local primary schools are Troon Primary School, Muirhead Primary School, Struthers Primary School, Barassie Primary School, and St. Patrick’s Primary School. Marr College is the local secondary school, and the nearest Catholic secondary school is Queen Margaret Academy.

As of January 2024, the average price for a residential property in Troon stood at £195,641. Though different property types in Troon have had different average selling prices over the last 12 months: £311,948 for detached properties, £228,895 for semi-detached, £141,777 for terraced, and £116,126 for flats.
